Car recalls are an inevitable part of automotive life. It affects even the most reputable brands. Every year, new issues arise in both old and new models. When recalls are announced, car owners are required to bring their vehicles into the respective dealership for proper fix.

Ford

Ford tops the list with the most recalled vehicles, with its 25th recall issued in 2024. It had 68 recalls in 2022 and 54 recalls in 2023. In total, 242,669 of 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles have been affected. This recall occurred because of the defect in its tail lights. Apart from this vehicle, the company is also recalling 450,000 compact SUVs and pickup trucks. This is because of a battery issue that has led to a loss of drive power.

Chrysler was the second most recalled car brand in 2023, with 45 recalls affecting 2,732,398 vehicles. This consists of the 17% of Chrysler vehicles on the road. The most notable recall was for the 2023-2024 Ram models. A defect in the steering column control mobile impacted over 142,000 vehicles. Along with this, certain 2018-2021 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 models were also recalled because of inflator rupture.

BMW

BMW did 29 recalls in 2023. This impacted 332,949 vehicles or 11% of BMWs on the road. The company recalled over 80,000 vehicles from the 2023 and 2023 model years. This includes the 5 and 7-series, i5, i7, X1, X5, X7, XM, and Rolls-Royce Spectre, among others. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the main reason was BMW’s integrated brake system which was not functioning as per the specifications. It could lead to potential loss of vehicle or extended braking distance, elevating the scope of crashes.

Mercedes-Benz had 27 recalls in 2023 which affected 395,504 vehicles. It consists of 10% of the total vehicles on the road and includes models like Mercedes C300 and Mercedes Sprinter 2500/3500. Many recalls were due to electrical system issues, faulty writing, and fuel pump problems. Another significant recall affected over 40,000 vehicles that lacked an inspection gauge for brake pad wear. It covers the models from 2019 to 2021. In March 2024 nearly 500,000 vehicles were affected because of the wiring issues that can result in fires.

General Motors

General Motors was the fifth most recalled car brand in 2023 with 22 recalls. It impacted 1,993,285 vehicles. The largest recall for this company involved over a million vehicles due to an airbag defect. The company recalled nearly 820,000 pickup trucks for the 2020-2024 Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Lyric, among others. It was done because of potential safety issues regarding tailgates and wiring issues.

Jaguar Land Rover

Jaguar Land Rover faced 19 recalls in 2023. The 2019-2023 Range Rover Sport, 2020-2023 Range Rover, Defender, 2022-2023 Discovery, and 2023 Range Rover Velar vehicles were affected. A significant recall involved engine-mounted oil cooler hoses that were not secured properly. The company has issued a recall for E-Pace models which affects 2,842 vehicles. The affected models were manufactured between 2021 and 2024. As per the NHTSA, this recall is because of a faulty brake pad warning light.

In 2023, Honda made 15 recalls for some of its 2023 CR-V vehicles. It was done to address the problem regarding the front passenger seat and back frame not being welded properly. This decreased the chances of protection in the event of a car crash. Honda recalled about 4.5 million vehicles worldwide in 2024. The recall was issued because of fuel pump issues. It impacts the 201802020 model year Honda Accord, HR-V, Odyssey, Passport, and different Acura models, among others.

Volkswagen had recalled certain 2023 ID4 rear-wheel drive vehicles, impacting 79,953 vehicles. Software issues influencing the center and instrument panel of the vehicle were the major reasons behind the recall. According to the NHTSA, the company also issued multiple recalls in 2024, impacting nearly 80,000 electric vehicles. This was done to prevent the vehicles from crash hazards.

Hyundai made a significant recall of over 2.6 million vehicles in 2023. It was issued due to problems with the anti-lock brake (ABS) system. It leaked brake fluid internally, leading to electrical shorts. The company also recalled 13,511 of its 2024 vehicles because of electrical short circuit issues. It can lead to loss of power in the vehicle, increasing the chances of crashes. The recalled models include Elantra, Venue, and Kona vehicles.

Tesla recalled over 125,000 vehicles in 2024. This was done because of the over-defective seat belt system in the vehicles. The software failed to issue a warning which increased the risk of injury and fatal wounds that would occur because of a car. This totaled 2.5 million recalls issued by Tesla so far this year. According to NHTSA, the most affected model was the Tesla Model S vehicle. These were manufactured between 2012 and 2014. This is followed by Model 3 vehicles manufactured between 2017-2023 and Model Y vehicles, developed between 2022-2023.

Kia recalled about 1.73 million vehicles due to problems associated with the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module. The chances of internal leakage of the brake fluid increased the chances of an engine compartment fire. The risk of the fire was unpredictable as it could occur during driving or while the car was parked. Some of the models recalled include 2014-1016 Cadenza, 2011-2013 Forte/Forte Koup, 2015-2017 K900, and 2010-2015 Optima, among others.

Nissan North America recalled certain vehicles from its 2024 Pathfinder and Infiniti QX60 models, impacting 12,019 vehicles. The company also recalled the 2023 Rogue vehicles, impacting 9,720 vehicles. The recall was issued because of issues with the lap belt pretensioner. The seat belt assembly was improperly secured and was missing a rivet. According to the NHTSA, the vehicles failed to abide by the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
