The 2024 presidential election is here, and more issues are being discussed and debated than in any previous election. The debates between both sides of the political spectrum, the Republicans (Trump supporters) and the Democrats (Biden supporters), are heating up.
Here is a list of sixteen cultural or woke issues in the 2024 Elections according to a survey of U.S. voters conducted by the Pew Research Center.
Gun Ownership
Gun ownership has always been a topic of debate in the United States; the debate has only intensified now. 86% of Trump supporters agree that gun ownership increases safety because it allows law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, while only 23% of Biden supporters believe in this. 52% of voters across both sides say gun ownership is somewhat bad.
Legacy of Slavery
79% of Biden supporters say that the legacy of slavery greatly affects the position of Black people in present-day American society. 73% of Trump supporters say that the legacy of slavery has no impact on Black people in today’s American society.
Four out of ten voters between ages 18-29 agree that the legacy of slavery greatly affects the position of Black people in today’s American society.
Gender Identity
Another major topic of debate in the current election is gender identity. The majority of Trump supporters agree that gender is determined at birth, and one cannot identify differently. 59% of Biden supporters say that a person can identify as a man or a woman, even if that identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. However, only 9% of Trump supporters agree with this notion.
65% of voters across both sides say that gender is determined by the sex at birth.
Racial Diversity
With the increasing population of immigrants worldwide, racial diversity in the U.S. is high.
82% of Biden supporters say that racial diversity is a strength of American society. 49% of Trump supporters say that diversity is a strength, but 19% say that diversity weakens American society.
11% of all voters say that racial diversity weakens American society.
Same-sex marriage
The Supreme Court legalized Same-sex marriage in 2015, but it has remained one of the main issues of debate in the 2024 election.
51% of Biden supporters say that the legalization of same-sex marriage is good for society, while the same percentage of Trump supporters say that the legalization of same-sex marriage is bad for society.
One-third of the total voters say that the legalization of same-sex marriage is good for society.
Abortion
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, and since then, abortion has been an important topic of debate.
88% of Biden supporters say abortion should be legal, and surprisingly, 33% of Trump supporters agree. 66% of Trump supporters say that abortion should be illegal.
Undocumented Immigrants
Individuals who reside in the U.S. without authorization or documentation are called undocumented immigrants. 59% of all voters say that undocumented immigrants should be legally allowed to stay in the country, while 37% say that there should be a national effort to deport those who are undocumented.
85% of Biden supporters say that undocumented immigrants should be eligible to stay in the U.S. if certain requirements are met, but 63% of Trump supporters say there should be a national effort to deport undocumented immigrants.
Judiciary
81% of Trump supporters say that the criminal justice system of the U.S. is not tough enough on criminals. However, only 40% of Biden supporters agree with this.
61% of total voters say that the criminal justice system is not tough enough on criminals, while 13% say it is too tough.
Marriage and Children
Marriage and having children are also hot topics in the 2024 election season. 59% of Trump supporters say that society would be better off if people made marriage and having children a priority, while only 19% of Biden supporters agree with this.
39% of total voters say that making marriage and having children a priority is good for society, while 59% of voters say that society is just as good if people don’t prioritize marriage and having children.
Pronouns
There is a lot of debate surrounding the usage of pronouns that has left people divided. 56% of all voters are not comfortable with using the pronouns “they or them.”
66% of Biden supporters and a meager 20% of Trump supporters are comfortable using gender-neutral pronouns like “they/them.”
LGBTQ+
LGBTQ+ has been one of the major topics of debate in the 2024 election; this is one of those subjects where both sides have a clear and polarizing stance.
51% of Biden supporters say that people identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual is good for society, but 53% of Trump supporters say this is bad for society.
A third of voters say that this trend is good for society.
Contraception
93% of Biden supporters say that the availability of contraceptives is good for society, and 66% of Trump supporters agree with this. However, 61% of men who support Trump don’t believe that the availability of contraceptives and birth control is good for society.
71% of total voters agree that the availability of contraceptives and birth control is good for society.
Artificial Intelligence
Despite the rapid integration of AI into our daily lives, there is broad skepticism about its usage.
55% of voters believe that AI is bad for society. 59% of Trump supporters and 51% of Biden supporters also believe this.
Bible and Laws
Mixing religion and state has always been a bone of contention among both sides of the political spectrum. 39% of Trump supporters say that the Bible should have a major influence, while 53% of Biden supporters say there should be zero influence of the Bible on American laws.
33% of all voters say that the Bible should have absolutely no influence on American laws.
Surname
75% of all voters are comfortable with women not taking their husband’s last name after marriage.
87% of Biden and 62% of Trump supporters are comfortable with this.
However, 44% of men who support Trump are uncomfortable with women not taking the husband’s last name after marriage.
Mental health
The recent years saw an increase in people openly and comfortably talking about mental health.
87% of all voters say that discussions and conversations about mental health are good for society. 94% of Biden supporters and 79% of Trump supporters agree.
